You'd think that 4 days after I arrive at a new school in a new country people would have fawned over my accent already, but no, that waited until today. Not that I'm complaining about it, I'm not seriously! But I think its funny, I'm guessing that word is getting around.
Today in Science, I got put at a table with all guys. Don't worry I don't like any of them! (Dad's probably gonna say that I jumped to conclusion that somebody was gonna say that but no I don't like them...at ALL.) So there was this one really talkative guy that sat beside me and he found out I was from Texas and he was all like, "say something!"
I said, "I really don't think I have an accent."
And he just looked at me and said, "
Woah! You do!" And started quizzing me on American stuff like
MLB and NFL. What my favorite teams were. And then he asked me about corn dogs. He asked me, "Do you eat corn dogs?"
I said, "Honestly, I really don't like them." Everyone around me gasped. "Well, I mean some people do, but I'm just not that big of a fan of them, " I said quickly.
Then he asked, "Whats in it?" I told him a hot dog and he
interrupted, asking, "Is there really corn in them?"
I said, "No there is no corn in there whatsoever."
He asked, "What is it then? Why is called a corn dog?"
I said, "Because it has corn bread around it." Then I noticed everyone at the table was listening to me talk about a corn dog and what it was. The crazy, simple things that make people listen...
Then later on he asked, "Whats your name again?"
I said, "Amber"
He said, "Oh wow! I love that."
All the attention made me smile, again NOT because I like him, I DON'T, but because it felt good to be noticed and wanted to speak to.
Then we got on with our experiment and one of the guys asked the teacher why do we have to wear eye glasses (science goggles) when we are not even doing anything really with our eyes. The teacher said something I didn't catch and then said, "I blame the Americans."
The guy said, "But she's American right there!"
I asked, "What are you blaming on the Americans?"
He said, "Nothing, nothing." and walked away. Then class was over.
At the end of the day, I was walking out when this guy from my
ICT class came and said hi. So I said Hi back and he said, "Wow you really do have the accent!"
I said, "I really don't think I do! I don't even hear it!"
He replied, "Well, your in England now!" And went downstairs.
So I guess my Texas accent that I don't think I have is getting around.
Adios, Y'all!
